• In the News - Election fever hits Northgate!

  You might have seen us on the BBC local news last week - the children did us proud as the BBC filmed part of our election process.

   

  Read on below to find out more about what we have been doing:

   

  This week we are running a mock general election in the run up to the real one.

   

  Thursday just like in the rest of the UK it is election day here at Northgate. 

   

  Children from year 3 upwards have been forming their own political parties focussed on the issues they care about.

   

  In groups of three or four, they have also written manifestos and held mock hustings with each class in the school voting for the most persuasive party and team presentation.

   

  We’ve had a fantastic response from our pupils who feel strongly about a range of different issues and they have been expressing that during a series of class hustings.

   

  Our mock general election helps prepare our pupils to play an active part in society, aids their understanding of the democratic process and inspires them to develop ideas to improve the world around them.

   

  Pupils’ campaign ideas have covered a range of topics including lifestyle issues such as encouraging children to exercise more and to eat more healthily, having more recycling bins in school and reducing plastic in pack lunches, doing more to help the homeless and raising taxes amongst higher earners to help public services such as the NHS.

   

  here are some of the views of our children on what's important to them: 

   

  “Children and adults need to do more about climate change because it is really important,”  Kristyna Chuckwuji aged 9.

   

  “Children should do more exercise so they can get fitter and healthier,” Alex Curry, aged 9.

   

  “We were learning about how to change and improve school and the environment by voting,” Ajijan Thavakumar, aged 8.
