PE

Intent

At Djanogly Northgate Academy, we believe that every child should have the opportunity to take part in physical activity on a regular basis and become more physically confident and competent. We hope that, through all the sporting opportunities and physical activity we offer, the children will develop a love and passion for sport and that this will continue into their later lives.

We strive to give as many children as possible the opportunity to compete in a variety of competitions, during school time or by representing the school at local events. We know that in doing so, children will develop greater confidence, team work and learn to win or lose with grace and sportsmanship.

It is of paramount importance that we create sporting leaders during the children's time at Djanogly Northgate Academy. We aim to offer children the opportunity to lead sporting activities, organise games and events and learn to lead by example. By emphasising leadership, children will learn the importance of communication, organisation, teamwork, resilience, perseverance and respect for rules.

DNA's Values as delivered through P.E.

Discover

Curiosity: I ask questions about new activities and games because I want to learn different sports and exercises.

Exploration: I try out different movements and techniques to see how my body can move in various ways.

Observation: I watch my friends and teacher carefully to understand new skills and strategies.

Nurture

Cooperation: I work together with my teammates, helping and talking to them so we can reach our goals.

Encouragement: I cheer on my friends and give them positive feedback during games and exercises.

Responsibility: I take care of the sports equipment and follow the rules to respect our shared space and tools.

Aspire

Goal Setting: I set personal and team goals to improve in different physical activities and aim to reach new levels.

Perseverance: I practice skills over and over and don't give up, even when something is hard.

Leadership: I guide and motivate my friends, especially those who are younger or less experienced, in our physical education activities.

Implementation

PE lessons are taught weekly within a half-term topic following a scheme that enables children to progress in skills and experiences from EYFS through to Year 6. PE topics are chosen to align with the whole-school curriculum principles, reflect the Northgate community and reinforce our values of Discover, Nurture and Aspire.

‘Think Like An Athlete!’

The P.E. curriculum at Northgate has been sequenced such that children will:

  • Understand the rules of games and how their bodies work.
  • Build on prior knowledge to become more rounded athletes.
  • Gain confidence in their own abilities and reflect on how they can improve.
  • Apply what they have been taught and see how each lesson builds on prior learning.

Impact
