Geography

Intent

We believe that Geography is a subject that can develop our children’s understanding of who they are, their place in the world and the world around them.

We aim foster a life-long curiosity and fascination about the world by equipping them with the knowledge about diverse places, people and natural and human environments. Their growing knowledge about the world will broaden horizons and help them to deepen their understanding of the interaction between physical and human processes.

The transformative knowledge they acquire will enable our children to have a voice within their local area, community and globally so that they can make a positive contribution for a fair, peaceful and sustainable world.

We integrate our school values into geography lessons:

  • Discover - In geography, children investigate inquiry-based questions through hands-on activities and fieldwork.
  • Nurture - Children show nurture by caring for their environment, respecting different places and cultures, and working collaboratively to explore and protect the world around them.
  • Aspire -

Implementation in Geography

Geography lessons at Northgate allow children to:

  • Ask geographical questions and query information and sources.
  • Collect, analyse and communicate with a range of data gathered through experiences of fieldwork.
  • Interpret a range of sources of geographical information including maps, diagrams, globes and aerial photographs.
  • Communicate geographical information in a variety of ways, including through maps, numerical and quantitative skills.

The following geographical concepts thread through the curriculum from EYFS to Year 6. Each lesson is taught through one or more of these concepts.
