Science
Vision
We strive for children to enjoy science; enthusiasm drives learning; learning embeds knowledge; knowledge opens opportunities. Children are equipped with substantive knowledge, so that they have the foundational understanding of scientific ideas. They become scientists through the disciplinary knowledge they are taught, which teaches them how scientific knowledge is established and revised. Through disciplinary knowledge, they also learn to enquire scientifically, which is an invaluable skill.
Intent
At Djanogly Northgate Academy, our intent is to spark a lifelong curiosity in science by making it meaningful, exciting, and rooted in the world our children know — starting right here in Nottingham. We want our pupils to see themselves as scientists, exploring the "how" and "why" behind everyday phenomena, from the River Trent to the changing seasons in our school garden. By building solid scientific knowledge alongside the skills to ask questions, test ideas, and reflect on findings, we empower children to make sense of the world around them and imagine the possibilities ahead.
Aspire, Nurture, Discover
Science at Djanogly Northgate Academy reflects our core values of Aspire, Nurture, Discover. We encourage children to aspire by showing them that science is not just a subject, but a pathway to exciting futures and real-world impact. We nurture curiosity and confidence, creating a supportive environment where every child feels safe to ask questions, explore ideas, and learn from mistakes. Through hands-on investigations and rich scientific discussions, we empower pupils to discover the wonders of the world around them and develop a deeper understanding of how things work.
Implementation
Our Science topics are arranged to complement other subjects, so we can make efficient use of spaced retrieval in lessons. This arrangement can be found on our Whole School Overview. The Science Unit Plans for each topic ensure all statutory objectives are covered, and all 'working scientifically' objectives are covered over the year. For the children's reference, a knowledge organiser is stuck in their books so they can refer back to the important vocabulary and knowledge being taught in the topic. Both are uploaded below.
