Days to remember...
We do PE on Friday afternoons this term and where possible we will be outside for these lessons.

It is important that the children's PE Kits are in school and that your child has suitable footwear for these lessons (plimsolls or trainers). For their own safety the children are not able to do PE in their everyday shoes, boots or sandals.

Please make sure that ALL jewellery is removed on PE days.

Reading books and Reading Race Tracks should be in school every day. Can you please encourage your child to read everyday if possible, record this on your child's reading race track - as you know we are running a reading challenge this year so the more your child reads the sooner they will complete two racetracks and win a book.

Please remember, our door is always open if you have any questions about your child's learning and you are free to change the children reading books within the same book band.

Spring Term 2 – 2019

In English this term our theme is Friendly Bears. We will read a number of stories about Paddington Bear as well as look at clips from the recent films which will allow the children  to use their imaginations and show us all of the new skills they have learned in Year 2 so far. On Tuesday our classrooms looked like the Bear Factory as we started off by making our own bears.

Towards the end of the term we will do a mini project called Take One Poet where we will look at some of the poems written by A.A. Milne, the creator of Winnie the Pooh.

In Maths we will continue to focus on ensuring that the children are becoming increasingly confident with the Year 2 Non Negotiables.

Our main focus areas this term will be addition and subtraction, fractions, time, position and direction and linked though these the children will have lots of opportunity to complete problem solving and reasoning activities.

Times tables continue to be a big focus in our Maths lessons and by this in Year 2 the children should confidently know their 10x and 2x tables. It would be fantastic if you could continue to support your child by practicing these on a regular basis and helping them to learn their 5x times tables. Don't forget to log onto Times Tables Rock Stars - it would be brilliant if Year 2 could win the competition for the most children using Times Tables Rock Stars this term! Click on the picture below to go to the login page and get started!

In our Topic work we will be trying to answer the question "How can I be a Superhero in my school?" As part of this we will be asking the children to think of ways to improve some aspect of the school environment.

Spring Term 1 – 2019

In English this term our theme will be Night time and we will be focusing on writing non-chronological reports. We will be reading lots of fact files about nocturnal animals and on 31st January we will be having some very special visitors I school – watch this space for pictures!! We will also use the skills we learn to write reports for our science and history topics this term.

In Maths we will continue to focus on ensuring that the children are becoming increasingly confident with the Year 2 Non Negotiables. Our main focus areas this term will be problem solving using multiplication and division, money. measures and shape.

Times tables continue to be a big focus in our Maths lessons and by this point of Year 2 the children should confidently know their 10x and 2x tables. It would be fantastic if you could continue to support your child by practicing these on a regular basis and helping them to learn their 5x times tables. We're looking forward to seeing all the children dressed Times Table Rockstars on Tuesday 5th February.

In our Topic work we will be trying to answer the question "Were Florence Nightingale and Rosa Parks superheroes?”

As part of this the children will be learning about why these two women from history were famous and how what they did still impacts on our life today. In science we are learning about what humans need to survive and stay healthy.

Autumn Term - 2018-2019

In English this term we are starting off exploring a book called a How to Catch a Star as part of the whole school book week. In class we will all help to create a giant star that will be part of whole school display and we hope that you will have chance to have a look at our wonderful artwork that will be on display in the hall and in our the Year 2 area towards the end of the first full week back.

For the rest of the term our English Topic will be Pirates (you may have already spotted our pirate ship outside the Year 2 classrooms!).  We will be writing some instructions in this topic but our main focus will be on fiction until the end of the term, reading The Night Pirates and Mungo and the Picture Book Pirates. The children will have lots of opportunities to impress us with their descriptive writing which we can't wait to see.

In Maths we are learning all about number this term with our main focus being to ensure that the children are totally secure with the Year 1 Non Negotiables. We will be looking at  rounding numbers to the nearest 10, the place value of numbers, addition and subtraction.

Times tables are a big focus in Year 2 and it would be fantastic if you could support your child learning their 10, 2 and 5 times tables to begin with.

In our Topic work we are trying to answer the question "How can we prevent disasters like the Great Fire of London and Grenfell Tower happening again?" As part of this investigation we will be using Now Press Play and we're are sure that the children will have a fantastic time working as historical detectives.

In October Year 2 will be visiting The Nottingham Contemporary to work with an artist who will then visit school to help us create a collaborative piece of art for school - this is a wonderful experience for the children and we can't wait to see their finished piece of art.

YEAR 2 SATS

During the last 2 weeks of May your child will be taking their SATs in English and Maths – these are compulsory for all children in Year 2 and we would request that you avoid taking your child out of school during this time.

To ensure that these are as stress-free as possible for the children the tests will be administered in small groups with an adult that they are familiar with.
